BHL Global Names fail

  • ssgiris by ssgiris moderator

Also, the BHL page for this book (http://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/12542992) claims there are no scientific names evident, which is amusingly incorrect. This is a list of genus, species, and common names.

ssgirls - the BHL page for this book says it recognized about 20 scientific names for this page (see Scientific Names on this page lower left of BHL viewer) although it struggled with this page for 2 reasons 1) OCR often does poorly on pages pre 19th century where various fonts and columnar layouts are used. 2) even if the OCR does pick up a scientific name if the name does not match a name currently used in practice it will say no names on the page. BHL runs the OCR against taxonomic name lists such as uBio and if there is a match it will link it to its page in EOL.

This is a perfect example of where we need Zooniverse volunteers help - where people are beneficial over machines 😃

Oops. You are right, trosesandler. It was page 317 which had no scientific names.
