Weird apparatus

Seems like some sort of photography device,an antique camera perhaps?A prototype?Or maybe I'm just saying nonsense...I wouldn't be surprised to be something that I wouldn't even guess.
Any ideas comrades scientists?

It's an Analyzing Selenite Stage (apparently!) - a device for adjusting a polarised beam of light to allow better observation of things under the microscope. Here's the start of the article. Happy reading @Harnut!
