This engraving is the smoking gun evidence of one of Victorian science's enduring hoaxes. It took until 1954 to be uncovered as a mish-mash of a modern human skull and an orangutan jaw. Charles Dawson achieved immortality. Just not the kind he envisioned when he announced this "find" to the Geologic Society of London.
