The Lamia

    (Though Hardwicke's calls it a Lama).

    This has been bugging me as I was sure I'd seen this before. Turns out it's from Edward Topsell's bestiary - a 17th century book about animals - some more fantastic than others. The full title is "The History of the Four-footed Beasts and Serpents" (1658). There is an on-line copy here in the Internet Archive. I have no idea how or where I saw this before - but it bugged me enough to go searching! 😃

    Thanks for the link! From a quick scan of that page, it seems like Topsell doesn't really buy it. 😃

    ... man, those "s-that-looks-like-f" always bugs the heck out of me in old writing...
